Crete is ruggedly beautiful, with fertile coastal plains, overshadowed by towering mountains, excellent beaches and great nightlife. Rethymnon has a vast stretch of sandy beach connecting the old and new town, with small resorts sprinkled along the coastal road. If you want to lie on a sun-drenched beach head for quieter Elounda or Aghia Pelagia. Picturesque Bali tumbles down to the harbour front, which comes alive at night and Panormos offers a pretty unspolit hamlet with two lovely beaches and traditional waterside tavernas or for a great mix of traditional Greek village life and beach holiday Kalives and neighbouring Almirida are perfect.

With so much diversity on offer, Crete is ideal for the independent traveller to explore by car. Samaria Gorge National Park is well worth a visit with its stunning 300m deep chasm. A trip to the amazing site of Knossos, King Minos’ Palace where Theseus was said to have killed the half-man, half-bull Minotaur, is a must. Alternatively, drive through sleepy hillside villages, or head for the quiet unspoilt beaches on the south coast.
